(TPMS) Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, it is an electronic safety feature in vehicles that monitors tyre air pressure and alerts the driver to low pressure through a dashboard warning light. It works by using either direct sensors in the tyres or indirect systems that use wheel speed sensors to detect pressure loss, helping to prevent unsafe driving, improve fuel efficiency, and extend tyre life.
TPMS WARNING LIGHTS
A TPMS warning light means there is a loss of pressure or a system malfunction and you should stop driving as soon as it is safe to do so. There are two different TPMS warning lights, a flashing yellow light often indicates a system malfunction a solid yellow light is usually due to low tyre pressure detected, a solid or flashing red light generally indicates a more serious issue such as a failure within the system quite commonly the TPMS sensor itself.
TYRE PRESSURE SENSOR ISSUES
TPMS sensors typically start to fail after 5 years and longer due to battery failure. When the battery fails, the entire sensor will need to be replaced. Sometimes, the sensors themselves can corrode if exposed to certain conditions. If sensors become faulty, they may not give the correct pressure readings for the vehicle.
TPMS AND THE MOT TEST
Vehicles will automatically fail an MOT Test if the warning light for the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is on for vehicles registered after the January 1, 2012. TPMS is considered a mandatory safety feature, and a warning light indicates a potential fault in the system, which could lead to unsafe driving conditions due to incorrect tyre pressure.
